"What Else Can I Feed My Dog Besides Chicken and Rice?" A Question We Hear Every Week.
If your dog has been unwell, chances are you've heard the same advice:
"Feed chicken and rice for a few days."
Chicken and rice can certainly be useful as a short-term, bland diet while your dog recovers from a stomach upset—especially if recommended by your veterinarian. But what happens when those few days turn into weeks? Or months?
At Bismark's Bistro, one of the most common questions we receive is:
"What else can I feed my dog instead of chicken and rice?"
The good news is that dogs don't have to eat the same protein every day to stay healthy. In fact, many dogs benefit from a little more variety, especially if they have sensitive digestion or appear not to tolerate chicken well.
Chicken Isn't the Only Healthy Option
Chicken is a wonderful source of lean protein for many dogs. However, not every dog thrives on it.
Some dogs develop sensitivities to chicken, particularly if it has been the main protein in their diet for a long time. In these dogs, changing to a different protein may help improve digestive comfort or skin health.
If your dog experiences recurring itchy skin, ear infections or digestive problems, it's worth considering whether a food sensitivity could be contributing to the problem.
Fresh White Fish: Gentle and Easy to Digest
One of our favourite alternatives is hake. Hake is naturally lean, highly digestible and gentle on sensitive stomachs. It provides excellent-quality protein while being lower in fat than many other meats, making it an ideal option for dogs recovering from digestive illness or pancreatitis, or for dogs that simply need a lighter meal. Many owners are surprised by how much their dogs enjoy fresh fish once they try it.
Venison and Other Game Meats
Venison has become one of our most popular proteins at Bismark's Bistro. As a novel protein, it can be a great choice for dogs that may not tolerate more common meats. Naturally lean and rich in nutrients, venison offers delicious variety while remaining gentle on many sensitive digestive systems. Other game meats can also provide excellent nutritional diversity as part of a balanced diet.
Lean Pork
Pork often gets an unfair reputation. When prepared correctly and trimmed of excess fat, lean pork is an excellent source of highly digestible protein. Many dogs find it exceptionally tasty, making it a wonderful option for fussy eaters who have gone off their food.
Good Quality Beef
Fresh beef remains one of the most nourishing proteins available for dogs. It provides high-quality protein together with important vitamins and minerals that support muscle maintenance, energy production and overall health. At Bismark's Bistro, we prepare our meals using fresh ingredients and combine them with wholesome vegetables to create balanced, complete meals that is registered with DAFF.
Could Your Dog Be Sensitive to Chicken?
We often meet dogs that have spent months—or even years—eating chicken as their primary protein.
Some of these dogs experience recurring:
· Itchy skin
· Red paws
· Licking and chewing between the toes
· Recurring ear infections
· Yeasty odours from the ears or paws
· Digestive discomfort
These signs can have many causes, including environmental allergies, parasites or other medical conditions, so it's important to work with your veterinarian to identify the underlying reason.
In some dogs, however, a sensitivity to a particular protein—such as chicken—may play a role. If that's the case, switching to a different protein can sometimes make a noticeable difference.
Fresh Food Gives You More Choice
One of the biggest advantages of feeding fresh food is flexibility. Instead of relying on a single protein, you can choose meals that suit your dog's individual needs.
At Bismark's Bistro, we offer a range of gently cooked proteins, including:
· Fresh hake
· Venison
· Lean pork
· Beef
Every meal is paired with carefully selected vegetables and gently cooked to make digestion as easy as possible. No artificial preservatives. No fillers. Just real food prepared with care.
Every Dog Is Different
There isn't one perfect protein for every dog. Some thrive on fish. Others do beautifully on venison. Some happily enjoy beef or lean pork.
Our goal isn't to convince every dog to eat the same meal—it's to help every owner find the food that suits their dog best. That's why we love creating personalised meal plans and helping families discover which fresh ingredients help their dogs feel their best.
There Is Life Beyond Chicken and Rice
Chicken and rice may have their place during short-term recovery. But long-term health is built on balanced nutrition, variety where appropriate and ingredients that your individual dog digests well. If your dog has become a little bored with chicken, has a sensitive tummy or you're looking for fresh alternatives, we'd love to help.
At Bismark's Bistro, we believe every dog deserves a healthy variety of proteins and veggies - nourishing food that supports a lifetime of health. Because sometimes, the biggest difference starts with simply changing what's in the bowl.
