Before the body can use these nutrients, the food must first be broken down into tiny particles that can be absorbed through the intestines. This is where digestive enzymes play an important role. Two Natural Digestive Enzymes We Often Recommend

Two of our favourites are papain and bromelain.

Papain

Papain is a natural enzyme found in papaya.  Its primary role is to help break down proteins, making them easier for the digestive system to process.

For dogs with sensitive stomachs or reduced digestive efficiency, papain may help the body make better use of the protein they eat.

Bromelain

Bromelain is a natural enzyme extracted from pineapple.

Like papain, it helps break down proteins and supports normal digestion.

Over the years, we've also noticed something interesting with some of our own clients. Dogs that regularly ate faeces in the garden (a behaviour known as coprophagia) sometimes stopped doing so after pineapple or a bromelain supplement was introduced. While this isn't guaranteed and stool-eating can have many underlying causes, it has been an encouraging observation in some dogs, and it's something we continue to discuss with owners on a case-by-case basis.

One of the biggest concerns we hear from owners of senior dogs is:

"My dog is eating well, but he's still losing weight."

Some older dogs simply don't digest and absorb nutrients as efficiently as they once did.
